Definition
Definition: Under general supervision from the Cultural Resources Department's O'Odham Piipaash Language Program (OPLP) Manager, researches, develops, plans and presents educational curriculum and instructional materials in the O'Odham and Piipaash languages. Assists the OPLP Manager in developing the language , conveying and preserving the history and culture by conducting Community classes for all age groups and students in the SRPMIC school system. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.

Examples of Tasks
1. Meets regularly with tribal Elders and fluent speakers to record and document the O'Odham and Piipaash languages.
2. Locates, acquires, catalogues and preserves existing documentation of the tribal languages.
3. Maintains a computer database of language in both text and audio formats. Updates the database regularly with new terminology and newly created terminology.
4. Assesses current needs and resources available for language preservation, maintenance and revitalization then assists with determining appropriate and effective projects and programs to support the language preservation and education.
5. Develops content, scope and sequence of determined language projects and programs.
6. Assists with the physical production and/or process of completing determined language projects and programs.
7. Utilizes developed materials to teach the languages to various age groups within the Community. Conveys related information about the languages in various, and appropriate, contexts.
8. Promotes and advocates language use within the Community (PR, newspaper articles, etc).
9. Provides day-to-day dissemination of information regarding the languages (e.g. translations).
10. Attends conferences, seminars, workshops and in-services to represent SRPMIC and share information regarding language preservation, maintenance and revitalization efforts.
11. Establishes and maintains working relationships with related tribes and other individuals and organizations relevant to SRPMIC language preservation, maintenance and revitalization efforts.
12. Seeks and solicits support for educational programs from Tribal leaders, communities, parents and others concerned with language preservation, maintenance and revitalization.
13. Performs other job related duties as assigned by the OPLP Manager.

Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from High School or a GED equivalent required.
Experience: Successful work experience instructing in a classroom setting, applicable cultural related demonstrations and presentations or acting as a language and/or cultural preservation and educational advocate is preferred.
Equivalency:Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.
Special Requirements
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

- Knowledge of the history, culture, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of advanced educational concepts, principles, theories and their application to the educational needs of the SRPMIC.
- Knowledge of language preservation, maintenance and revitalization techniques.
- Knowledge of language development and presentation programs.
- Skill teaching the languages and nuances of the language culture to all age groups.
- Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Community Members, the Elders, Tribal officials, resource agencies and the public.
- Skill writing for publication including, but not limited to, verbal and written presentation materials, displays, pamphlets, bulletins, public relations and education items and other educational materials.
- Skill developing a sense of pride in the O'Odham and Piipaash languages, culture, customs and traditions.
- Ability to make dynamic and effective presentations using professional teaching techniques.
- Ability to convey the O'Odham or Piipaash languages in an informal classroom setting.
- Ability to lead students of all ages thru the language learning process.
- Ability to log learning information into the OPLP database.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from High School or a GED equivalent required.
- For enrolled Community members without a GED, must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Education or a closely related field preferred.
