ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS:

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Fire Inspector performs inspections of businesses, buildings, schools and institutional occupancies for
compliance with the Communitys Fire and Life Safety Ordinance, and other required and appropriate codes and
standards. This position is designed as an intermediate level ?re prevention inspector to assist in the
implementation of Fire and Life Safety codes and standards in order to protect Community Member lives and
property and to provide for the safety and well-being of guests to the Community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Conduct inspections of events and activities for adherence to codes and standards, issue permits and
certi?cates of compliance.Test ?xed ?re protection systems, underground ?re lines, emergency access and some special ?re protection
systems.Conduct limited plan review of systems, events and activities; appropriate application of codes and standards
to the plan review process is expected; consultations with developers, builders, architects, boards and
commissions will be a common activity.Assist investigators in the course of investigating structural ?res and large scale incidents leading to property
loss, injury or death (involves processing of a ?re scene for evidence and interviewing witnesses/suspects in
cases of arson).Act as a mentor for FALSE personnel within the division and utilize educational opportunities to further their
knowledge base.Research the application and viability of existing and adopted codes for modi?cation and interpretations;
submit comments and changes to the ICC, NF PA to modify Community Codes.Research existing code reference materials for correct interpretation and application of life safety systems and
features; write dissertations and interpretations of ?ndings and report to/address governing bodies, contractors
and department directors.Evaluate research, plan and request appropriate code interpretation for implementation and enforcement (often
associated with new construction projects and involves the negative input of other affected departments).
Investigate explosions and ?res for cause and origin as assigned; investigate non-criminal deaths that occur
at events;Conduct random and requested inspections of facilities and activities within the community.Assist with large complicated structures or events that require code enforcement and education.Make limited committee and council presentations.Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY:Knowledge of principles and methods of ?re prevention and ?re inspection.Knowledge ?re codes, building codes, and related codes and their interpretation and intent.Knowledge of ?re detection and extinguishing systems.Knowledge of hazardous materials, proper storage, use, application and response to ?re.Knowledge of elements and requirements of a legal report.Ability to analyze, interpret, and explain technical ?re and building codes, ordinances, plans and speci?cations
as they apply to speci?c situations.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to analyze computerized data and operate computerized data entry and retrieval systems.Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Of?cials
and general public.Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a drug-free workplace.REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:High School diploma or GED and three (3) years experience in ?re prevention inspections, building safety
inspections, ?re investigations and/or ?re code enforcement; OrHigh School diploma or GED and four (4) years as a ?re?ghter.Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Science Technology or
closely related ?eld is preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Required to pass a background check and ?ngerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must
continue to maintain throughout duration of employment.International Code Council Fire Inspector I required.Certi?ed Fire Fighter I & II (AZ, IFSAC or Pro-Board) or provide proof of successful completion of a program
meeting National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional
Quali?cations is preferred.Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and NFPA Fire Inspector I certi?cation is preferred.Maintain current CPR certi?cation at the Healthcare Provider level or equivalent or ability to obtain with 30
days of employment.Required to obtain a Tribal Driving permit. Valid state drivers license with a current proof of driving
record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving
record must be submitted with application and must not he more than 60 days old from the date of
submission of the application.Non-Supervisory, Hourly Position
