Definition

Definition: Under close supervision from the Food Program Coordinator in the Family Assistance Division of the Social Services Department, assists in the coordination of maintaining and delivering food products to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.

Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

Examples of Tasks

1. Organizes, maintains and accounts for food products that are obtained, organized and distributed thru the Food Program.

2. Assists in the coordination of the food distribution sites.
  • Creates a sufficient space for the food pallets and verifies that boxes are unloaded by the Public Works Department at the correct locations or at the Salt River food distribution site.
  • Prepares food products for agreed upon quantity before the doors are opened.
  • Reviews dates on boxes and disposes of spoiled food products.
  • Follows client eligibility criteria and oversees crowd control.
  • Determines family appropriate quantities in order to avoid the resale of food.
  • Assists in the coordination of pickup and delivery for leftover fresh food products with local reservation farmers or end users.

3. Coordinates the distribution of food products to local Community members with special circumstances who are not able to come to the food distribution site.
  • Identifies members on both sides of the reservation who need food boxes.

4. Assists Food Program Coordinator in promoting increased utilization of services through public relations campaigns and nutrition education programs.
  • Promotes the benefits of food program to potential applicants and existing clients.
  • Explains the food program, its requirements and hours via community newspaper, e-mail and voice mail systems.
  • Posts signs notifying patrons of the hours for both the food program building and all of the food distribution sites.

5. Assists in compiling and providing the data for the weekly and monthly required reports to the external food programs that SRPMIC receives food from.

6. Assists in the implementation of nutrition education programs and outreach activities geared toward the needs of the program's clientele and potential applicants.
  • Compiles nutritional information regarding food products.
  • Gathers nutritionally sound recipes, menus and cookbooks utilizing food products available for distribution.
  • Promotes food items not widely accepted by program participants through creative recipes and preparation techniques.

7. Assists in the coordination of in-service training concerning the food program for Community members with other departments and divisions.
  • Explains intake forms for food box requests to clients and assists them in completing the forms.

8. Secures a food handler's permit. Becomes familiar with the local food programs and the requirements for food handling and the intake process.

9. Obtains and distributes emergency food boxes for Community Members.

10. Restocks the shelves regularly in the Food Program. Rotates newer food products to the back of the shelves and freezers.
  • Cleans the freezers on a monthly basis.
  • Keeps the food and work areas free of insects and rodents.
  • Cleans the Food Program building and grounds on a weekly basis, before and after shipments are received.

11. Provides transportation services to clients as necessary under the Family Assistance Division Program guidelines.

12. Performs other duties as assigned by the Food Program Coordinator or Social Services Manager to maintain and enhance the program operation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of the general dietary nutritional needs and problems of the Pima and Maricopa people.
  • Knowledge of nutrition basics.
  • Knowledge of food safety practices.

  • Skill with program Public Relations as demonstrated by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with SRPMIC staff, Community Departments and outside entities.
  • Skill organizing areas for product storage.

  • Ability to drive various SRPMIC vehicles and operate machinery such as a forklift, floor-pallet dolly and utility cart.
  • Ability to lift boxes of food products weighing up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely program records according to prescribed standards.
  • Ability to utilize the personal computer and related software, including MS Office, in order to fulfill job requirements.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required.
  • For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
  • 1 year full time work experience working with the public in a customer service capacity required.

  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.


Special Requirements

  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must obtain Food Handler's Card upon hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
