Job Description

Facilities Management, Grounds Services, seeks a Grounds Crew Chief to supervise a crew in the maintenance of large-scale irrigation systems for turf, trees and ornamentals. 


Salary Range

$21.92 per hour or commensurate of experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Essential Duties

  • Ensure irrigation programming is adjusted appropriately due to ET demands, seasonal changes, event programming, plant establishment, etc.
  • Assist Supervisor in assigning and coordinating irrigation repairs with crew, when necessary.
  • Monitor irrigation system performance and flag issues for repair.
  • Identify and report any grade/turf issues to Supervisor.
  • Update controller legends, as needed.
  • Install and set up new irrigation controllers.
  • Analyze system efficiency and suggest improvements to Management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 5:00AM - 1:30PM, and will need to be available to direct activities as required for night and weekend campus events and emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.


Minimum Qualifications

Five years of grounds maintenance related work experience which includes one (1) year of lead experience; OR, Associate's degree in Horticulture or related field AND three (3) years of grounds maintenance related work experience which includes one year of lead experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.


Desired Qualifications

Experience in:

  • Program irrigation controllers
  • Underground sprinkler repair and/or installation.
  • Design and/or redesign of irrigation systems. 
  • Grounds maintenance in a university/higher education setting.
  • General turf care.
  • Mowing and overseeding practices.


Knowledge of:

  • Principles of horticulture.
  • Principles, practices and/or techniques of irrigation maintenance.


Working Environment

  • Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements indigenous to a desert environment; weather; and potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Use protective equipment (PPE).
  • Regularly required to operate a variety of landscaping equipment, tools and machines requiring extended periods of walking over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Walk and inspect campus.
  • Drive university vehicle/cart.

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).


Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.


Must pass pre-employment physical including, audiogram exam, post offer of employment.


This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.
