Job Description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work in the operation of heavy-duty equipment effectively and

safely; and is responsible for maintenance, repairs and adjustments to highly specialized costly equipment

requiring constant attention to protect from damage.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 Operate a variety of equipment, which may include backhoes, motor graders, dump trucks, tractor, water

trucks, stripers, loaders, blades, scrapers, bulldozers, etc.

 Operate a truck trailer with lowboy unit attached for transporting heavy equipment.

 Perform minor maintenance and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.

 Notify supervisory personnel for need of regular, preventative, or emergency maintenance of all heavy

equipment.

 Perform duties under varied field conditions.

 May be required to work varied hours depending on work schedules, seasonal schedule, emergencies, etc.

 Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILTIY:

 Knowledge of the operation of hydraulically operated equipment.

 Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions of heavy equipment operation.

 Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved with equipment operation.

 Skill in the operation of various types of heavy trucks and equipment.

 Ability to work independently.

 Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

 Ability to coordinate eye-hand–foot movements.

 Ability to service, adjust and make minor repairs to heavy construction equipment.

 Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the

public.

 Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.
