Job Description
The Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work in the operation of heavy-duty equipment effectively and
safely; and is responsible for maintenance, repairs and adjustments to highly specialized costly equipment
requiring constant attention to protect from damage.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Operate a variety of equipment, which may include backhoes, motor graders, dump trucks, tractor, water
trucks, stripers, loaders, blades, scrapers, bulldozers, etc.
Operate a truck trailer with lowboy unit attached for transporting heavy equipment.
Perform minor maintenance and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
Notify supervisory personnel for need of regular, preventative, or emergency maintenance of all heavy
equipment.
Perform duties under varied field conditions.
May be required to work varied hours depending on work schedules, seasonal schedule, emergencies, etc.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILTIY: Knowledge of the operation of hydraulically operated equipment.
Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions of heavy equipment operation.
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved with equipment operation.
Skill in the operation of various types of heavy trucks and equipment.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to coordinate eye-hand–foot movements.
Ability to service, adjust and make minor repairs to heavy construction equipment.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the
public.
Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.
