Job Description

Facilities Development and Management, Facilities Management, Knowledge Enterprise, seeks an HVAC Refrigeration Technician Lead at the Tempe campus who will have responsibility and accountability for problem solving and resolution to keep the research buildings operational at all times and coordinate the work activities of others.

Salary Range

$24.48- $27.09 per hour commensurate of experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Essential Duties

·        This position requires a highly technical skill set to support cutting edge research buildings in addition to participating in the maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC systems.

·        Troubleshoot, install, repair, and overhaul equipment such as pumps, motors, air compressors, sewage ejector pumps, processed water systems, chillers, refrigeration compressors, air handlers, and other components relating to HVAC-R systems.

·        Problem solving and ownership of issues until resolution is found.

·        Utilize hand tools (e.g. pliers, wrenches, screw drivers, hammers, grips, cutters, saws). 

·        Plan and develop work schedules, equipment usage schedules, and procedures for equipment maintenance.

·        Maintain preventative maintenance records.

·        This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays. 

·        Clearly communicate to perform essential functions of the job. 

Days and Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30AM-4:00PM

 

Minimum Qualifications

   Seven years of progressively responsible HVAC or refrigeration equipment installation, maintenance and repair experience; OR, completion of a four year federally approved technical training program in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC or refrigeration equipment AND three years of HVAC or refrigeration installation, maintenance and repair experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Some positions may require Chloroflourocarbons Certification upon employment. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

 

Desired Qualifications

Lead experience in HVAC- Technician Trade (3 years)

 

Experience in:

·        Labs and cleanroom environment

·        Control systems (DDC Metasys; Phoenix Control) 

·        Commercial/industrial installation and maintenance of HVAC mechanical and refrigeration

·        Using customer service skills

·        Commercial/industrial maintenance and repair; rebuilding; troubleshooting and installation of:

·        Air handlers and air handling systems

·        Centrifugal pumps, steam and chilled water equipment

·        Electric motors and variable frequency drives

·        Lab and specialty exhaust systems

·        Sewage ejector pumps

·        Air compressors

·        Primary, secondary and process water loop systems

·        Cooling towers, chillers and chilled water cooling systems

·        Basic and advanced electrical circuits

·        Basic and advanced refrigerant VAV and HVAC systems and cycles

·        Ventilation system operation and diagnostics

Evidence of:

EPA 608 Universal CFC certification

Effective communication skills

 

Working Environment

·        Utilize power tools (e.g. drills, generators, saws, lifts, vacuum equipment).

·        Climb ladders, ladder wells, and stairs. 

·        Work off ladders using hand tools and power tools to include working off lift platforms and boom trucks at heights above six feet.

·        Use lifting, moving, and rigging equipment to safely move, transfer, or relocate heavy equipment.

·        Operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines. 

·        Handle CFC refrigerant. 

·        Work in adverse working conditions such as confined spaces (e.g. tunnels, man holes, vaults), dirty areas, low lighting, and extreme temperatures. 

·        Stoop, bend, and reach. 

·        Walk throughout campus.

·        Lift up to 75 pounds.

·        Drive University vehicles. 

·        May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator). 

·        Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.

This position requires that you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

 

Must possess EPA 608 Universal Chlorofluorocarbon Certification upon employment and maintain throughout employment.

 

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test.

 

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than state appropriations. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
