Salary Range: $46,000 to $50,000 per year; DOE


The College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you will report to the lab manager and will work collaboratively with the lab manager and faculty in the design, development, and instruction of curricula and course materials that take advantage of laboratory facilities/equipment and instructional technologies and apply the best practices in teaching and learning.


The Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator is part of a science program within CISA that involves a community of teachers, peers, and instructional assistants who work collaboratively to engage students in developing understanding of scientific knowledge and processes.


This is a full-time position located at the Arizona State University Downtown Phoenix campus.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist faculty with planning instructional activities in the teaching labs, recommending supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure course content is presented as planned, and assignments are received, graded and recorded in accordance with established guidelines and standards.
  • Work with preparation lab staff to assure proper set up of laboratory experiments, including equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in maintaining inventories; requisition and restock supplies for teaching laboratories.
  • Directly deliver instruction to students in lab sections and in other course components as needed.
  • Assist lab manager in the hiring, supervision and training of lab teaching staff. 
  • Answer questions concerning experiments and provide training on equipment usage and proper techniques.
  • Monitor equipment for proper functioning, perform minor repairs and calibrations on equipment and contact appropriate party to perform major repairs.
  • Produce clear documentation and other instructional materials (student, lab teacher, and prep lab instructions; websites; multimedia; and online tutorials) to execute instruction in the laboratory and online environments.
  • Assist in maintenance of student grade records.
  • Maintain equipment in labs for teaching purposes.
  • Coordinate outreach at the college, university, and community levels through tours and events.
  • Ensure compliance with accommodations for students registered with the Disabilities Resource Center as they pertain to the chemistry lab sections.
  • Supervise and train a large number of undergraduate student instructional assistants.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Evidence of a Master's Degree in chemistry or a related field. 
  • Experience in general chemistry lab instruction
  • Experience in coordination of multi-section courses. 
  • Experience in supervision of laboratory and teaching staff.
  • Experience in curriculum development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the use of technology to teach general chemistry topics. 
  • Experience using instrumentation to teach organic chemistry topics. 
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of University Policy and Procedures, especially in the area of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory operation
  • Experience in complex problem solving and decision-making.
  • Experience working independently without supervision.
  • Experience in regularly changing priorities to accomplish tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships within organizational area.


Working Environment:

  • Many activities are performed in an environmentally controlled lab/office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse. 
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time in a classroom or laboratory and travel moderate distances to perform work.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories including but not limited to lab coat, gloves, safety goggles, and close-toed shoes.
  • May require early morning or evening hours depending on teaching schedule.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. 
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • This position receives regular review of objectives by supervisor.
