Overall Job Objective

Position Overview

The Law Librarian provides assistance with legal research and education services for Law Library Resource Center patrons.

Position Qualifications

Minimum education and/or experience:
Master's degree in Library Science from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association and 1-2 years of professional experience in an academic or law library.  
 
Specialized training, certifications, and/or other special requirements:
Valid Class D Arizona driver's license and reliable personal transportation.
 
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Current and emerging electronic legal research technologies.
  • Standard library acquisitions policies and procedures. 
  • The use of standard serials indexes and resources. 
  • Library data systems. 
  • The principles of cataloging. 
  • The Library of Congress classification and subject headings.
  • Library record keeping and filing. 
  • Legal terminology. 
  • Library collection. 
  • The principles of reference services. 
  • Legal research methods and techniques. 
  • Court procedures and operations. 
  • State laws, rules and regulations. 
 
Skill in:
  • The use of on-line databases (i.e. Westlaw, Hein Online, Fastcase, Integrated Library Systems) and Microsoft Windows products (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
 
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 
  • Interpret, analyze and evaluate legal information and draw conclusions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 
  • Deal tactfully and competently with the public. 
 
Preferred education and/or experience:
Juris Doctorate.  Three to five years of experience in an academic or law library. Experience using on-line databases (i.e. Westlaw, Lexis, Integrated Library Systems) to provide assistance with legal reference, research, and online services.
 
Preferred training, certifications and/or other special requirements:
Training and/or experience with cataloging.
 
Working conditions:
May require travel to regional locations throughout Maricopa County. Essential Job Tasks

  • Provides legal reference services in person, via telephone and via email using exceptional customer service.
  • Travels to regional locations to provide legal reference services.
  • Assists with drafting and revising library literature including research guides and bibliographies.
  • Assists with the development and delivery of educational courses for internal and external customers.
  • Assists with the acquisition and distribution of law books for judicial officers.
  • Assists with the acquisition of new print and electronic library materials.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.
Selection Procedure

The hiring authority will select the successful candidate based on departmental needs.
 
External candidates are hired at the minimum of the salary range.  Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for current Judicial Branch or County employees depending on current classification and related experience.
 
All Judicial Branch offers of employment and continued employment are contingent upon passing a thorough background/fingerprint check.  Applicants must completely and fully answer any questions regarding felony and misdemeanor convictions including any convictions that have been expunged or set aside. Failure to include criminal history information is grounds for termination of an offer and employment. A conviction may not automatically disqualify an applicant.
 
Judicial Branch facilities are located throughout Maricopa County.  This position may be reassigned to other locations.  Assignments will be made based upon the needs of the department.
