POSITION PURPOSE:
Under general supervision in an outpatient clinical setting, provides initial patient triage, registration, and administrative services, assists with direct patient care, and performs specialized medical procedures of a routine nature, as dictated by established clinical protocol.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Responsible to the Clinic Manager. Medical Assistants support midwives, physicians, and other medical staff in providing healthcare services to patients. Clinical duties may include: collecting patient medical histories, preparing patients for examination, measuring vital signs, collecting and processing samples, and assisting provider in medical procedures. The individual performs all of the activities required to provide womens health patient care in the clinic setting and may work in other areas as appropriate based on experience and training including, registration, Homer Medical Clinic, or inpatient setting.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
- Must be at least 18 years of age and be a high school graduate or GED Equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year of office/clerical experience preferred.
- 1 year of MA experience required. Prior or current CNA and/or EMT-1, or Health Care Specialist may be considered with appropriate experience in a healthcare setting.
- 1-2 years of previous hospital or clinic experience preferred. Must understand chart flow, record keeping, order entry and scheduling.
- Certification as Medical Assistant preferred.
- Possess a working knowledge and use of Medical Terminology.
- This position requires receptionist skills, including the ability to deal courteously and tactfully with patients, their families, and facility personnel both in person and by phone. Must possess good communication skills. Demonstrates ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Must stay current in BLS training.
ENVIRONMENT:
South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed critical access hospital and 28 bed long term care facility with a nine bed Emergency Department located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The environment is generally pleasant, clean and well maintained. The Womens Health Clinic provides prenatal and postnatal care, STI management, menopause management, well womens exams, newborn care, and well-childs care through age 3 years. The position requires walking, sitting for prolonged periods, stooping, and standing. Generally, physical demands are light and most work is performed inside. Working hours may fluctuate based on the demands of the work.
