SUMMARY

Maban County Hospital in Upper Nile State has been supported by Samaritan’s Purse (SP) since 2011. It is the only secondary care provider in the region therefore receiving many referrals from the four surrounding refugee camps as well as the host community in Bunj. The workload is intensive and requires a team of dedicated health professionals to meet the ever increasing demand for specialized medical care at the hospital. Therefore, the Medical Doctor at Maban County Hospital will provide medical and surgical care of the patients in the hospital. The Medical Doctor will be supervised by the hospital’s Medical Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.       Maintain a personal, active relationship with Jesus Christ and is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ.

2.       Contribute to the overall delivery of care at the hospital including tropical diseases, pediatric, obstetric / gynecological, medical and surgical care.

3.       Responsible for daily ward rounds; as frequent as the patients’ conditions demand but standard is twice per day.

4.       Assist with out-patient consultations. Must review all cases for admission and write out pre-admission instructions.

5.       Supervision of junior hospital staff to ensure maximum use of their skills and potentials to ensure good quality health services are delivered.

6.       Be available for calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

7.       Offer hands - on clinical instruction to nurses during ward rounds and in surgery.

8.       Must be available to assist the nurses with difficult procedures.

9.       May be called upon to offer classroom lectures to the nurses and or midwives as need arises.

10.   Prepare medical and epidemiological monthly reports.

11.   Attend all managing meetings concerning the hospital.

12.   May act as Medical Director in his absence.

13.   Follow policies and procedures of Samaritan’s Purse as set forth in the Policy Manual.

14.   Attend daily morning devotions and participates in prayer support for the ministry, donors and volunteers.

15.   Maintain a strong Christian witness to colleagues, vendors, charitable beneficiaries, and the general public.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises non-supervisory and supervisory employees.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

MBCHB degree in Medicine from a recognized University; post graduate degree in internal medicine / surgery would be an added advantage; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a minimum working experience of three years to five years post-internship in resource-poor settings.  Twelve credit hours of college-level Biblical studies strongly preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret medical documents and reports. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence clearly required. Ability to speak effectively and persuasively before groups and other humanitarian actors required.

·         Arabic language skills preferred but not required.

·         Excellent skills in spoken and written English required.

REASONING ABILITY

Practical, quick reasoning skills required. Must be able to keep communication lines open with all parties in the program. Needs strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to coordinate activities with other agencies while building and maintaining positive working relationships

·         The working conditions associated with this position will include outdoors exposure to harsh and changing weather conditions (for instance, rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.).

·         The employee will be required to live and work in an area near an active conflict zone. The employee may be required to, periodically, endure meager meals depending on the availability of shipping means through which to transport fresh foods.   

This is a 2 - 4 week contract to fill in for doctors who are on leave (ongoing recruitment).

This is an unaccompanied position.
