Job Description

Be your awesome self while performing patient testing and donor processing to include blood product labeling as well as maintenance functions in the laboratory while complying with laboratory and safety procedures, and regulations. Meet and exceed customer expectations and adhere to established quality practices while seeking to continually improve work performance.


Full Time Weekend Shift: Sat, Sun, Mon, Tuesday 10AM-830PM (train for a few weeks M-F)

 Responsibilities:

  1. Perform all patient testing functions. This includes ABO testing, antibody screens, antibody identification work-ups, antigen testing and cross matching.
  2. Process Apheresis platelet products and Acrodose platelet manufacturing according to manufacturer guidelines while ensuring compliance with FDA & AABB standards,
  3. Efficiently and thoroughly manage receipt of donor testing results from ETF. Ensure timely receipt of all testing results.
  4. Accurately label blood components that are available for distribution.
  5. Work as a team member to ensure the efficient release of safe blood products.
  6. Diligently and accurately follow all procedures for testing, maintenance, safety, and quality control.
  7. Ensure guidelines for good manufacturing practice and compliance with SOPs and applicable regulatory agencies are met. Actively seek guidance from department management when questions arise.
  8. Ensure all required timelines for proficiency and competency assignments are met.
  9. Maintain a clean and safe work environment by practicing all safety guidelines.
  10. Assist with validation protocols as requested by management.
  11. Assist the Laboratory Manager to maintain adequate reagent inventory and supplies through careful monitoring of reagent usage and placement of new reagent stock.

  13. As needed, learn special techniques for component preparation and administration.

 Requirements: 

  1. Associates of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent. ASCP or NCA Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Blood Bank Technologist (BB) preferred.
  2. Familiarity with, or ability to learn, cGMP, AABB and FDA regulations.
  3. Punctual and dependable.
  4. Able to work on call, rotate through on call schedule– extended on-call hours may be required.
  5. Maintain a positive team environment within technical services and throughout We Are Blood.
  6. Must be flexible and adaptable, as well as organized and detail oriented.
  7. Must be at least 21 years of age with a valid Texas Driver’s license, proof of insurance with the state required levels of coverage and an acceptable driving record.

 Physical and/or Mental Abilities: 

  1. Ability to focus in a busy and often noisy environment while making sound decisions at stressful moments.
  2. Must be able to multi-task
  3. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  4. Must be able to work in an area where biohazardous elements can exist.
  5. Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  6. Demonstrated ability to be detail oriented. 
  7. Manual dexterity and good hand/eye coordination.
