Position Summary

Under general supervision will be responsible for the provision of recreational services for participants with disabilities for the Parks and Recreation Department; ensuring participants with disabilities equal access to programs with Bernalillo County's established policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide support to participants with disabilities, based on assigned accommodation plans and sound inclusion practices.
  2. Assist inclusion participants with activities and with identified accommodations needed; utilize appropriate techniques to motivate and encourage client participation.
  3. Work in conjunction with other program staff; supervise inclusion participants ensuring their safety, social inclusion and accommodations.
  4. Observe clients physical, social and behavioral status and participation in activities and relay progress reports to manager and other staff members.
  5. Recommend and assist in the implementation of Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Department accommodation plans; monitor program to ensure compliance with established standards.
  6. Prepare statistical and participant progress reports as needed.
  7. Assist in budget preparation, planning, purchasing, and administrative duties, record keeping, and tracking attendance of program participants.
  8. Assist in arranging transportation for inclusion participants to off-site activities as necessary; transport clients within a facility to activities or in a vehicle to transport clients to outside activities.
  9. Track mandatory inclusion training requirements and provide reports when needed.
  10. Make recommendations to the Inclusion Manager regarding changes to the established accommodation plan.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Minimum 18 years of age and/or high school diploma or GED.
  2. Minimum of six (6) months recreation or child care experience working with people with disabilities.  OR completion of 30 college credit hours in Physical Education, Education, Recreation or related field.
  3. Must have the ability to plan and prepare organized structured recreational activities; instruct, motivate and lead program participants.
  4. Must have basic knowledge to recognize the nature and symptoms of physical, mental and cognitive disabilities; understand the concept of recreational inclusion.
  5. Must have the ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants and the general public.
  6. Must have the ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants and the general public.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English when dealing with internal and external parties, to prepare accurate, concise, complete and informative written materials.
  8. Must have the ability to work under the conditions and the equipment described.
  9. Ability to work productively either independently or as a team member of team leader.
  10. Ability to maintain objectivity and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of complex and potentially sensitive projects
  11. Proficiency in the use of computers including word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics software.
  12. Ability to effectively lead and train others.
Supplemental Information

Screening and Compliance

The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

  1. Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  2. Employee must possess a valid New Mexico Driver's License by employment date and retain a valid NM Driver's License while employed in this position.
  3. Employee must obtain Red Cross certification in First Aid and CPR within 90 days of hire.

Working Conditions

  1. Works with general direction and with select groups.
  2. Work performed both indoors (60%) and outdoors (40%).
  3. Worker will be exposed to natural weather conditions when working outdoors.
  4. Duties will be performed on sand, gravel, asphalt, grass, wood floors and tile, all of which may be wet or dry.
  5. Required to work variable hours.
  6. Work hazards are those normally encountered in the instruction or participation in sports activities.

Equipment, Tools and Materials

  1. Sports equipment such as used in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, etc., and various arts and crafts supplies are utilized in the performance of essential duties.
  2. Equipment and materials typically used in the performance of clerical duties include telephone, computer, copier and basic office supplies.
  3. Equipment typically used in performance of maintenance duties includes mops, brooms, buffer and window cleaning supplies.
