Definition

Under general supervision from the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, maintains plants, grass, shrubs, and flowers in all park areas. Maintains and repairs sprinkler systems. Builds and installs sprinkler systems, park equipment, ramadas, and removes and disposes of all debris, discarded plants and other waste materials. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt and a DRIVING position is subject to working on call and weekend hours.
Distinguishing Features: This position is distinguished from the Grounds Maintenance Worker through more direct involvement in horticultural activities, including care, conservation and abatement of plants, grasses, and garden/landscape design, construction and maintenance.

Examples of Tasks
1. Cuts and maintains all grass, trees, shrubs, flowers, etc., in Community parks. Removes weeds and debris from parks grounds and planted areas. Conducts scheduled watering of grass, trees, and other plants and flowers. Removes and discards plants as needed, and apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to keep landscaping healthy and attractive.
2. Performs regular inspections on park ramadas, picnic tables, grills, and playground equipment. Cleans, repairs, and replaces worn or damaged items as required.
3. Installs sprinkler systems and drip lines for grass, trees, plants, etc., in Community parks. Repairs and replaces broken sprinkler heads as needed. Inspects sprinkler systems on a regular basis to ensure that ample water is supplied to grass and plants.
4. May be required to maintain and prepare athletic fields and grounds for practices, sporting events, and special events.
5. Assists in preparing and setting up for special events to include assembling or setting up tents, canopies, tables, chairs, portable stages, and other related event equipment.
6. Performs other job related duties and special assignments as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years' experience in the maintenance of grounds and outdoor areas. Certification in the use of pesticides and herbicides is preferred.
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
Special Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

- Knowledge of rules, procedures, methods and practices of grounds maintenance.
- Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of groundskeeping equipment.
- Knowledge of proper care, nurture and maintenance of plants, shrubs, grass and trees.
- Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance, including the hazards and safety precautions associated with their use.
- Skill in operation and maintenance of groundskeeping equipment and machinery.
- Skill in upkeep of grounds, fields and planted areas.
- Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping work, including, sprayers, trimmers and mowers.
- Skill in following oral and written instructions.
- Ability to pick up and carry objects weighing at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to and bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment such as push and riding mowers, string trimmers, edgers and shears.
- Ability to safely use fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides using appropriate safety precautions and protective equipment.
- Ability to work in various types of weather conditions with exposure to elements.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public.
