Definition
Definition : Under direction of the Chief Pharmacist, serves as a Staff Pharmacist filling authorized prescriptions and providing education for patients of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) and other tribes as applicable. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Examples of Tasks
Prescriptions: Prepares medications for patients from both original prescriptions and refills.
Education & Counseling : Provides education and counseling to patients including, but not limited to, the proper usage of medications, side effects, correct storage and dosing schedule.
Inventory Management : Participates in inventory management of all pharmaceuticals in the Pharmacy, ordering drugs appropriately and updating medication outdate log.
Provider Communication : Consults with Primary Care Providers on a daily basis and with Renal, Rheumatology, Ophthalmology and other specialty providers as needed.
Pharmacy Data Maintenance : Maintains pharmacy data and runs the refill line.
Certification & Accreditation : Assists with maintaining accreditation certification (if applicable), personal professional licensure, and continuing education as required.
Miscellaneous : Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Chief Pharmacist to maintain and enhance departmental operation.

Examples of Tasks
- Reviews refill requests on a daily basis, creates charting notes as applicable, and sets up non-refillable prescriptions for provider review and processing.
- Utilizes professional judgment in notifying providers of problematic requests.
- Queries the Arizona State Controlled Substance Prescription Monitoring Program for narcotic requests and copies results to pharmacy notes when appropriate.
- Contacts patients when clarification of medication request is needed.
- Reviews provider notes in the electronic charting system before processing prescriptions to assure appropriateness of prescribed therapy.
- Reviews allergy information, renal function, lab data, weight and other pertinent information to assure proper dosing and resolves all discrepancies with prescriber prior to processing the order.
- Conducts Drug Utilization Reviews (DUR), maintaining accurate patient medication and allergy profiles.
- Reviews hospital discharges and outside prescriptions for appropriateness of filling, medication changes, duplication of therapy, dosing and drug interactions. Contacts providers as needed for clarifications or changes.
- Enters a pharmacy note in the electronic charting system for any changes resulting from discussion with a provider, telephone discussions with patients, outside prescriptions and for provider notification of action needed.
- Identifies potential barriers to compliance and assists patients with solutions to those barriers.
- Maintain drug database in electronic charting system and drug dispensing system.
- Captures signature and identification information for dispensed prescriptions.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical references.
- Knowledge of sources of state-of-the-art information regarding pharmaceuticals.
- Knowledge of the chemical and biological properties of pharmaceuticals and their proper storage.
- Knowledge of Tribal, Federal and State laws, ordinances, policies and procedures for handling, storing, maintaining and dispensing drugs of all classes.
- Knowledge of disease processes, especially Type II Diabetes, End Stage Renal Disease/Dialysis and medications utilized in their treatment.
- Knowledge of quality assurance processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of the formulary and policies.
- Knowledge of and experience with Pharmacy Billing and Prior Authorization processes.
- Skill preparing and dispensing all classes and dosage forms of medications.
- Skill educating and counseling a wide variety of patients in the proper and safe use of medications at a level appropriate to their understanding.
- Skill participating in the development of coordinated policies for pharmacy/clinic/agency improvement.
- Skill dealing with difficult customers while utilizing house rules to investigate and resolve customer complaints.
- Skill using computers, pharmacy robotics and other software, including documents and spreadsheets, in order to fulfill job requirements.
- Ability to translate complicated technical information and instructions into patient centered language at the appropriate level of understanding.
- Ability to teach and counsel patients effectively.
- Ability to process prescriptions and multi-task with exceptional accuracy while working in a high demand setting.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with SRPMIC co-workers, all health care staff and especially with patients and their families.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including cellular phone, photocopier, FAX machine, label printer and computer.
- Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Require a pharmacist degree (i.e., PharmD or BPharm/B.S.Pharm) from an accredited college/university AND one year full-time experience as a licensed pharmacist OR previous employment/pharmacy student rotation with SRPMIC.
- Must be licensed with the State of Arizona Board of Pharmacy
- Clinical and outpatient experience preferred
- Familiarity with the Indian Health Service (IHS) preferred
- Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.
- Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill
