Definition: Under clinical supervision of the Chief Pharmacist, is responsible for preparing medications for patient consumption, in accordance with standard departmental procedures. The Pharmacy Technician II is the lead technician responsible for training visiting pharmacists and new technicians the protocols & procedures of the pharmacy. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt.

Examples of Tasks

1. Mentoring, Training & Workflow: As the lead technician, this position will assist Pharmacy staff with training and mentoring.
Mentors staff so they attain the technical and customer service skills along with experience necessary to perform to the fullest extent possible within their scope of practice.
  • May manage scheduling and work duty rotations of pharmacy technician staff.
  • Assists with training new technicians and providing on-going training for staff that emphasizes customer service and efficiency.
  • Familiarizes temporary staff with system procedures and processes, when necessary.
  • May assist with workflow, including coordinating and maintaining fill/stock cycle schedule for technicians.
  • Collaborates and assists in improving guidelines and procedures.
  • Provides subject matter expertise on troubleshooting automated dispensing machines.

2. Outpatient Pharmacy Care and Prescription Processing: Demonstrates customer service skills while communicating with clinic staff and patients.
  • Accurately fills and batches prescriptions for subsequent checking by a pharmacist.
  • Effectively communicates with professional medical staff, other clinic staff and patients.

3. Patient Medication Counseling: Provides independent patient medication counseling for medication dispensed.
  • Verifies patient identification and verification of patient medication use.
  • Answers patient specific medication questions.
  • Elicits medication-related problems that may require a pharmacist consultation.

4. Supply: Performs inventory and makes order based on PAR levels.
  • Prepares and submits order for review through use of Telxon or hand held device.
  • Receives and stocks order with appropriate documentation and rotation of stock.
  • Assures that medications stocks are rotated and are stored under appropriate conditions.
  • Orders supplies and IV solutions from outside medical sources or clinic warehouse through an automated system.
  • Conducts & assigns unit inspections accurately and on time, and maintains records per policy.

5. Controlled Substances: Observes policies, procedures and guidelines with respect to controlled substance inventory.

6. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community
  • Knowledge, skills and procedures of IV Admixture sterile compounding preparation.
  • Knowledge of the RPMS or other electronic health record Pharmacy Package, the clinic computer system, and dispensing automation such as Scriptpro and Omnicell technology.
  • Knowledge of written prescriptions and pharmaceutical terminology (e.g., medication names, dosages and forms, etc.) in order to pull, process, fill, compound prescriptions, communicate with health care staff, etc.
  • Knowledge of computer usage to maintain and safeguard accurate records, in accordance with departmental needs.
  • Knowledge of weights, measures, and mathematical computations in order to process, fill, compound prescriptions, etc.
  • Knowledge of standard pharmacy policies and procedures relating to record keeping, receipt, checking, storage and delivery of medications.
  • Knowledge of standard pharmacy policies and procedures of IV Admixture sterile compounding.
  • Knowledge of Omnicell medication storage units.

  • Skill in properly storing and ordering medications including stock rotations.

  • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare personnel in order to provide quality care.
  • Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures and ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information
  • Ability to use excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple and diverse people and tasks in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, take initiative and use good judgment.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required; current Pharmacy Technician certification with the National Board of Pharmacy required; Arizona Pharmacy Technician license required.

Experience: A minimum of ten years pharmacy technician experience required. Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience directing technician staff preferred.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements

  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
