Definition
Definition : Under general supervision from the Diabetes Services Program Coordinator, develops, plans and implements physical fitness training, activities and education related to diabetes prevention and containment for children, youth, adults and seniors within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC). Provides individual and group coaching so program participants realize their full fitness potential and diabetes prevention. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.
Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.
Examples of Tasks
1. Fitness Intake : Assesses clients' fitness level upon entry into any program activity.
2. Client Monitoring : Monitors individual clients' progress, counsels clients and records information in client files.
3. Group Fitness Programs : Organizes group exercise programs and classes and serves as leader for group exercise programs and classes.
4. Individual Fitness Coaching : Provides coaching to enable and support individuals to identify their personal potentials and achieve their health fitness goals.
5. Fitness Center : Provides information and instruction on proper use of exercise equipment.
6. Special Events, Projects & Fitness Education : Participates in community-wide special events and education programs designed to prevent and control diabetes.
7. Fitness Program Administration : Conducts participant surveys to determine satisfaction with programs and to assess on-going needs.
8. Miscellaneous: Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Diabetes Services Program Coordinator, Assistant HHS Director (Health) or HHS Director.

- Administers fitness testing and screening devices to determine health risks.
- Makes recommendations for, and implements, exercise prescription and programs.
- May refer clients to other health or social services as appropriate.
2. Client Monitoring : Monitors individual clients' progress, counsels clients and records information in client files.
- Maintains all appropriate client records.
- Works with clients in adjusting exercise prescriptions and program to meet their individual needs.
- Reviews client participation in programs to ensure appropriateness of scheduled activities.
- Reviews participation to provide diversity of accessible classes at all fitness levels.
3. Group Fitness Programs : Organizes group exercise programs and classes and serves as leader for group exercise programs and classes.
- Designs and establishes choreography for group exercise classes.
- Teaches exercises for a variety of programs, populations and special needs or limitations.
- Leads proper technique for warm-up, stretching, aerobic, cool-down and relaxation exercises.
4. Individual Fitness Coaching : Provides coaching to enable and support individuals to identify their personal potentials and achieve their health fitness goals.
5. Fitness Center : Provides information and instruction on proper use of exercise equipment.
- Maintains fitness equipment and schedules necessary repairs as well as regular maintenance to prevent mechanical breakdown.
- Cleans equipment and designated areas as assigned by the Diabetes Program Services Coordinator.
6. Special Events, Projects & Fitness Education : Participates in community-wide special events and education programs designed to prevent and control diabetes.
- Prepares fitness educational materials for seminars, special events and for on-site reference needs for program participants.
- Develops and presents information to individuals and organizations using appropriate verbal and written presentation skills.
7. Fitness Program Administration : Conducts participant surveys to determine satisfaction with programs and to assess on-going needs.
- Makes necessary program adjustments as determined by survey results, client participation records and supervisor's direction.
- Prepares reports as directed by supervisor.
- Performs miscellaneous administrative work in addition to fitness tasks. This may include leading tours of fitness facilities, registering new members, monitoring the front desk, writing articles plus attending meetings, workshops and training sessions to upgrade skills and maintain required certification as directed by Supervisor.
8. Miscellaneous: Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Diabetes Services Program Coordinator, Assistant HHS Director (Health) or HHS Director.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of the physiological implications of physical exercise and physical fitness.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of aerobic exercise, water aerobics, walking and running for physical fitness.
- Knowledge of symptoms and progression of diabetes and methods of prevention and containment of the disease.
- Knowledge of the basic techniques of CPR, First Aid, universal precautions for blood borne pathogens and emergency referral procedures.
- Knowledge of medical and public health resources available to SRPMIC.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and policies for safeguarding confidential information.
- Knowledge and strong interest in physical fitness and education.
- Skill establishing and maintaining client records.
- Skill with the use of a personal computer and related software.
- Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, supervision, co-workers and representatives of resource agencies.
- Skill writing for publication including pamphlets, signs, bulletins and other educational materials.
- Skill assessing and evaluating emergency situations and utilizing appropriate emergency procedures.
- Skill evaluating client needs and utilizing program and SRPMIC resources, or other appropriate referrals to meet such needs.
- Skill with effective verbal and written presentations.
- Ability to portray a strong interest in physical fitness and education.
- Ability to demonstrate effective and friendly communications skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate and timely records according to prescribed standards.
- Ability to successfully complete CPR and First Aid training and to maintain certification in these areas.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent AND experience equivalent to at least three (3) years full time work in a physical fitness program, preferably related to diabetes prevention, AND completion of three or more courses at the post-high school level in Physical Fitness, Physical Education, Exercise Science or closely related program;
- OR , completion of a two-year Community College Associate's degree program in Physical Fitness, Physical Education, Exercise Science or closely related program AND experience equivalent to at least two (2) years fulltime work in a physical fitness program, preferably related to diabetes prevention.
- OR , A Bachelor's degree in physical fitness, exercise science, physical education or closely related program, AND experience equivalent to at least one (1) year of full-time work in a physical fitness program, preferably related to diabetes prevention.
- Must possess certification in CPR, First Aid and universal precautions with blood borne pathogens, or be able to obtain such certification within the probationary period.
- Must be able to obtain certification as a Physical Fitness Specialist; preference will be given to candidates who possess certification as a physical fitness specialist.
- Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
Special Requirements
- May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
