DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Police Property and Evidence Technician is responsible for preserving the chain of custody and security of
hazardous/non-hazardous evidence and non-evidential property received from law enforcement personnel.
Receives, logs, packages, stores, inventories, issues and assists in the release or disposal of adjudicated materials.
Releases, transports, and issues evidence for the purpose of performing laboratory tests and/or for use during
court proceedings or for law enforcement purposes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
0 Receives, reviews, catalogs, labels, tags, marks packages and documents; safeguards integrity of the chain ofcustody.Ensures hazardous materials are appropriately handled, identi?ed, stored, transported and legally disposed of.Releases items of evidence to authorized law enforcement personnel.Reviews security controls and alarms and makes recommendations as needed.Conducts inventory of property and evidence as required to ensure safeguarding of and accurate accountingof all items stored.
0 Conduct needs assessments, updates and implements guidelines and policies and procedures as directed, to
accommodate legal changes impacting the submission and storage of evidence.
- Destroys narcotics and unclaimed and unsold ?rearms in accordance with prescribed procedures and after
authorization from Tribal Law of?ce.
- Attempts to locate owners of property and returns property to owner as directed.
- Attends meeting and training sessions to remain updated on job speci?c issues.
0 Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILL, AND ABILITY:I Considerable knowledge of applicable federal, state, and tribal laws, codes, and regulations.
I Knowledge of police procedures for impounding and safekeeping of property.I Knowledge of computers and software.I Working knowledge of ?rearms operation.I Basic knowledge of modern photographic techniques and equipment, including video.I Ability to understand and follow handling, retrieval and disposal procedures carefully.I Ability to implement storage, security and accounting procedures for items of a sensitive nature and/or
valuable impounded property.I Ability to work independently.I Ability to display discretion and integrity in the performance of duties.I Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.I Ability to work irregular hours, holidays, weekends, and call outs.I Ability to bend, stretch, stoop, reach, and climb (stairs or stepladders).I Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Of?cials
and the general public.I Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High School diploma or GED and a minimum of two (2) years experience performing responsible clerical work,
police work, and/or warehousing and inventory control.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
0 Required to pass a background check and ?ngerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must
continue to maintain throughout duration of employment.
0 Required to obtain a Tribal Operators permit. Valid state drivers license with a current proof of driving
record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record
must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the
