Job Description

Reporting to the Director of the Institute for Humanities Research (IHR), the primary role of the Research Advancement (RA) staff at the IHR is to support faculty, staff, and students in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences humanities division and humanities Centers by providing direct support to research investigators in the area of proposal preparation. This includes, but is not limited to: funding award searches, internal submission routing, drafting budgets and budget justifications, checking proposal documents against sponsor guidelines, and preparing post-award documentation in coordination with financial teams. Research Advancement staff at the Institute for Humanities Research also serve as liaisons for CLAS humanities including humanities units, departments, centers, and humanities research investigators in their interactions with the Office of Research and Sponsored Project Administration (ORSPA). The primary role of ORSPA is representation of ASU as an institution with external sponsors. The IHR Research Advancement staff confirms that submitted applications meet all ORSPA guidelines in order to ensure ASU’s standing with external funders. ORSPA and Research Advancement staff form a partnership in support of the entire research enterprise at ASU.

 

Salary Range

$42,900 - $67,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

Duties for RA housed in the Institute for Humanities Research include, but are not limited to:

·      Working with humanities faculty, units, and centers in all aspects of pre-award grants. The IHR RA assists in the entire award lifecycle (primarily pre-award) ensuring that the units’ and center’ business operations teams oversee the post-award transactional duties and management of each project.

·      Performing funding searches to help identify opportunities

·      Reviewing funding announcements and providing guidance on eligibility and sponsor requirements

·      Contacting sponsors for clarification of application guidelines

·      Providing assistance in drafting budget justifications in conjunction with PI/Unit/Center

·      Assisting sub-recipients with questions related to completing sub-recipient commitment forms

·      Preparing sponsor budget forms or creating acceptable budget formats

·      Assisting and completing other sponsor-required forms and review for compliance (current and pending support, biosketches)

·      Completing administrative information according to sponsor guidelines

·      Completing and routing all internal forms using information provided by PI/Unit/Center

·      Verifying cost sharing required by sponsor

·      Uploading files for sponsors requiring electronic submission

·      Reviewing proposals against guidelines before sending to the Office of Research and Sponsored Project Administration

·      Submitting applications to the Office of Research and Sponsored Project Administration for review, signature, and transmittal to sponsor

·      Assisting with post-submission action items requested by the sponsor such as Just In Time requests, revised budgets, scope of work, additional certifications, etc.

·      Providing assistance in preparing administrative post-award management including:

·      At-Risks, Pre-Award Costs, re-budgets, No Cost Extensions, and all other OAF-related actions

·      Resource to research investigators and departmental business staff on sponsor policies and regulations regarding the administration of award funds

·      Facilitate compliance issues and assist in resolution between unit business teams and ORSPA

·      Acts as administrative resource to ASU research investigators, provides assistance, guidance and counsel during development, pre-submission administrative review, management, authorization and transmittal of grant and contract proposals to federal, state, and private funding agencies. May advise unit or center business administration with applicable regulatory and financial compliance requirements.

·      In conjunction with and in support of ORSPA, provides assistance and support securing additional information during negotiations as necessary

·      Reads award documents to determine restrictions and other pertinent information

·      Advises ASU research investigators and work with unit business operations teams regarding renewals and periodic reports for grant agencies

·      Works as an advisor as needed to unit or center business managers reconciliation of accounts for compliance of charges in accordance with sponsoring agency/contract conditions and requirements

·      Manages pre-awarded phase of projects in accordance with University and sponsor regulations

·      Maintains all applicable project records and files until award spending

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field. Five years of experience in a field appropriate to the area/unit of assignment OR Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

·      Demonstrated knowledge of policies, procedures and requirements of all applicable regulations governing management of grants and contracts

·      Operational knowledge of applicable government and sponsor websites

·      Knowledge of ASU financial and research management tools

·      Knowledge of computer applications and information dissemination technology

·      Experience in using Microsoft Office Suite including computer database systems

 

Working Environment

·      Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting.

·      Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer.

·      Bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.

·      Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.

·      Ability to work both independently or within a complex structured team.

·      Normally receives no instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments with review of completed tasks.

·      Exercises judgment within generally defined practices & policies in selecting methods & techniques for obtaining solutions.
