Definition: Under general supervision of the Principal the School Counselor is responsible for demonstrating leadership, advocacy and collaboration to promote student success, provide preventive services and respond to identified student needs by implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career and personal / social development for all students. The School Counselor provides crisis intervention, individual, group and support services enabling student's social, emotional and academic growth. Students are referred by school personnel, counselors, parents, other students and self-referral. Services are provided on-site at school settings.

Job Duties
Development and Management of School Counseling Program
  • Discusses the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator.
  • Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of school counseling based on best practices and current individual school data.
  • Communicates the goals of the school counseling program to education stakeholders (i.e., administrators, teachers, parents and community).
  • Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders.
  • Uses the majority of time providing direct services through guidance curriculum, individual student planning and preventive and responsive services. Most remaining time in program management, system support and accountability.
  • Uses data to develop comprehensive programs that meet student needs.
Program Guidance Curriculum
  • Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the school-wide integration of guidance curriculum.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
  • Incorporates into their programs the life skills that students need to be successful.
Individual Student Planning
  • Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic career and personal/social skills, goals and plans.
  • Accurately and appropriate interprets and utilizes student data.
  • Collaborates with parents / guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career and life planning.
  • Provide student behavioral management consultation and planning, including classroom observations, monitoring and follow-up
  • Provide Behavior Intervention Plans for specific students; when required provide IEP behavior goals for specific Special Education students as required
Preventive and Responsive Service
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs
  • Provide activities designed to improve and support the emotional, behavioral and social skill development of students.
  • Provide crisis intervention and student support groups (grief/loss, social skills, friendship, divorce, etc.).
  • Consults and collaborates effectively with parents / guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational / community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
  • Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
  • Provide assistance to families with the referral process for ongoing individual/family counseling, medical issues, or other social services provided through the community.
  • Attend and participate in Agency meetings and consultations.
  • Conduct guidance classes and/or workshops, conferences, and training sessions for students which are designed to increase their understanding and knowledge of and individual skills and abilities in problem-solving, goal-setting, decision-making, relationships, inter-and intrapersonal communications, conflict resolution, career and education/training identification, substance abuse, self-esteem, personal growth and development, and cultural identity.
  • Conduct training sessions for staff, parents, and other community-members in areas of personal growth and development, to include parenting, motivation, self-esteem, communication skills, problem-solving, decision-making, cultural identity, and other areas of focus that are designed to enhance the support system and advocacy for students.
System Support
  • Provides appropriate information to school personnel related to the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Assists teachers, parents / guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
  • Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program.
  • Adheres to law, policies, procedures and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
Accountability
  • Regularly evaluates program implementation and effectiveness.
  • Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
  • Maintains up to date documentation on each child seen.
  • Measures results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.
  • Maintains data and information regarding students in a confidential matter in accordance with Privacy Act, Confidentiality Act, the Counseling Profession ethical requirements, and other applicable standards and ethical requirements.
  • Conduct duties and responsibilities in accordance with SRPM School Board Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure that individual endeavors are complimentary to the standards of the Counseling profession and to the nature of respected individuals, including demonstration of positive behavior in the community as well as in the school environment.
Other
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Other Characteristics
A willingness to learn and understand:
  • History, culture, traditions, and customs of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community or a willingness to learn.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles of childhood growth and development
  • Chemical dependency issues and the impact on education
  • Classroom guidance curriculum
  • Child Protective Services (CPS) procedures
  • Adolescent mental health assessment and solution focused brief therapy
Skilled in:
  • Counseling student and adults through divorce, grief and loss
  • Behavior management, intervention and support in a school setting
  • Computer programs including MS Office Suite and Internet usage
  • Assessing, reviewing and recording information
  • Oral and written communication/interpersonal skills
Ability to:
  • Provide student guidance for diversity of socio-economic, multicultural backgrounds and special education needs
  • Meet face-to-face with students, parents, and staff to develop rapport, provide information, counsel and refer
  • Communicate effectively in person and on the phone
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with administrators, colleagues, administrators and parents

Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience: Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field with appropriate Arizona Certification with a Guidance Counselor endorsement to function as a School Counselor.
  • Successful experience conducting individual, group and family counseling within a school setting.
  • Demonstrated competency in program development and guidance program administration, career and academic assessment, psychological assessment and other applicable skills and abilities.
  • Experience working with Native American Population Preferred.

Driving Requirement: This job description does not require the incumbent to drive; however, any employee who chooses or is asked to drive an SRPMIC vehicle for work related community business must receive written annual authorization to do so. For clarification, work related community business includes driving to and from SRPMIC government sites and buildings.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements

Terms of Employment: This position is treated as a full-time exempt position scheduled for 40 hours per week.
Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment Drug Test and extensive Fingerprint and Background Check. Employee is Subject to Random Drug Testing and completion of a Background Check every five (5) years.
