Senior EEG/EMG Tech, 36 HRs/Week, Day Shift, Weekends and Holidays Required

I. Position Function:

With a minimum of routine supervision, performs a variety of routine and complex electroencephalographic procedures, evoke potentials and nerve conduction studies.

II. Job Relationships:

Collaborates with Director of Laboratory.

Collects information and presents it to the responsible physician with a preliminary interpretation and supportive documentation.

Responsible for in-service training of other technicians and fellows.

Participates in lab conferences and technical meetings.

III. Authority:

Responsible for in-service training of other technicians and fellows.

Instructs other technicians and/or fellows in techniques of nerve conduction, the use of the testing equipment and lab protocols.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Nerve Conditions Studies:

- Abstracts relevant information for the patient's clinical record and obtains additional

information by questioning. Discusses overview of procedure planning with physician and

implements desired plan including placement of electrodes, nerve stimulation, monitoring the

quality of outputted wave-forms with adjustment for artifacts or other technical problems.

- Records all relevant measurements.

- Compares data to lab normals for presentation to the physician. Reviews data with physician

and discuss need for further nerve conduction studies.

- Assists physician during needle examination by supplying all necessary equipment and

recording results either on paper or in the computer.

- Instructs other technicians and/or fellows in techniques of nerve conduction, the use of the

testing equipment and lab protocols.

- Assists medical staff during special procedures.

- Participates in lab conferences and technical meetings.

Evoked Potentials:

- Prepare instruments, place recording electrodes and perform visual, auditory and multiple

somatosensory evoked potentials.

EEG:

- Abstracts relevant information for the patient's clinical record and obtain additional

information on questioning.

- Applies EEG electrodes in standard predetermined measured sites on the patient's head and

monitors for accuracy

- Calibrates and adjusts the EEG machine in accordance with standard procedures.

- Selects predetermined electrode combinations as well as special combinations made

necessary by the special features of the individual case. Obtains standard recordings,

recognizes artifacts and makes the appropriate corrections for them. Uses activation

procedures such as hyperventilation, phonic stimulation and sleep.

- Describes all abnormal clinical and electrographic features of the test. Writes a technical

report which serves as a preliminary report to the interpreting physician.

- For brain death recordings, follows established guidelines for appropriage electrode

placement, patients stimulation, and recording techniques.

- May perform the above work in the neurophysiology laboratory, at the patients bedside or in

the intensive care unit.

- Performs operative EEG monitoring by remaining in the operating room during carotid

vascular surgery. The brain waves are observed and important EEG changes are brought to

the attention of the vascular surgeon.

- Assists in supervising other technicians as required.

General Activities:

- Keeps all equipment in a clean operating condition, detects instrument malfunctions and

makes minor maintenance adjustments. Arranges for instrument(s evaluation by appropriate

biomedical technician or outside vendor specialist when required.

- Maintains patient test areas, changes bedding, monitors appropriate supplies.

- Enters patient data into the computer or on the appropriate test form(s).

- Stores recording and obtains prior studies for comparison.

- Assists patients with clothing and other needs including reassurance.

- Assists in the training of new staff.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

As needed, assists in the booking and confirmation of appointments.

Assist with inpatient care needs or bringing such needs to the attention of qualified personnel especially during times after recording tests until patient is returned to room.

V. Reporting Requirements:

Reports to Director of the Neurophysiology Laboratory.

Reports all incidents to Director which include personnel or patients issues.

VI. Accountability:

Accountable for maintaining confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical staff-related, and patient-related data and information.

Will be accountable for observing all policies and procedures of the department.

Will be accountable for any personnel or patient issues to be discussed with Director of Neurophysiology Laboratory.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

High School

Minimum Experience:

3-5 years as an EEG technician and 1 year doing supervised nerve conduction studies.

Minimum skills/abilities:

Able to perform a variety of routine and complex electroencephalograpohic procedures, evoked potentials and nerve conduction studies.

Certification/Licensure:

EMG and EEG technician board eligible; certification preferred.

Training:

EEG/EMG/EPS Program from an Institution or School.
