Definition

Definition :Under general supervision from the Assistant Director, supervises, manages, administers, plans, implements and evaluates comprehensive and inclusive social (non-athletic) programs for SRPMIC. Incumbent is responsible for selecting, training and evaluating Recreation Coordinator I & II staff and part-time employees. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Examples of Tasks

1. Oversees development of social programs for SRPMIC youths and adults.
  • Establishes programs objectives and short/long range goals for all social programs, special events, after-school programs, Girl Scouts, and seasonal day camps.
  • Ensures program compliance with pertinent laws, policies, procedures, SRPMIC ordinances, rules, regulations, and licensing standards.
  • Evaluates program results and makes necessary adjustments within guidelines.
  • Establishes and implements selected trauma informed behavior management models
  • Ensures staff are using inclusive and trauma informed methods within all programs


2. Manages the day-to-day activities of programs and assigned staff in a fast paced environment
  • Maintains employee files.
  • Provides leadership and training in requirements of the positions.
  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, coordinates, schedules and reviews work of staff.
  • Responds to staff questions regarding assignments.
  • Oversees preparation and accuracy of time cards and payroll documents for staff.
  • Responsible for timely and proper completion of employee performance evaluations reviews (EPARS).
  • Monitors staff effectiveness and recognizes achievements as well as corrects deficiencies in performance.
  • Provides counseling, guidance and instruction as needed; counseling includes career counseling and goal-setting.
  • Works closely with Adaptive Coordinators to support staff in providing an inclusive program environment
  • Effectively addresses behavior challenges by working with staff and parents/guardians


3. Manages and supervises the day-to-day operations of all Social Program activities and events
  • Organizes and schedules activities for Social Programs.
  • Implements new programs as required.
  • Develops and coordinates special events and special interest classes that address the recreational needs of the Community.
  • Thoroughly plans and schedules program events and activities 6-12 months ahead; includes arranging transport, meals, vendor payments, supply orders, facility reservations and multi media requests.
  • Develops, promotes and maintains specialized programs including, but not limited to, Girl Scouts, Young Warriors and Outdoor Recreation.
  • Represents the Department as requested on various committees including but not limited to, SRPMIC event planning committees, WOLF meetings, etc.
  • Develops and arranges professional development trainings/workshops for all staff to keep up with best practices in an out of school time setting


4. Assists in the development and implementation of specialized recreational programs and activities to meet the needs of participants involved in out-of-school time programs: after-school, seasonal camps, Girl Scouts, Outdoor recreation.
  • Organizes and assists with enrollment and registration in the various programs as required.
  • Monitors sign-in and sign-out, as applicable, to ensure the participants release to authorized family members or approved custodial care persons.


5. Coordinates and assists in organizing special holiday celebrations, traditional activities, and other annual Community functions.
  • Works cooperatively with individuals, outside agencies and Community organizations to determine the types of events required.
  • Coordinates seasonal Day Camps and assists SRPMIC departments with organizing and implementing special Community and employee events (i.e. elders, Tournaments, leagues) as needed.


6. Coordinates the development of multi-media materials such as flyers, videos, pamphlets and brochures to market and promote program events and activities.
  • Prepares reports concerning the effectiveness of new or ongoing social programs and issues including customer survey information and usage statistics.
  • Implements customer satisfaction survey tools and compiles results and recommends improvements based on data collected.
  • Conducts periodic inventory of all recreation supplies and equipment.


7. Assists in the preparation of yearly budget recommendations for funding of recreational programs, events and activities and social program financials.
  • Ensures expenditures are handled in accordancewith established SRPMIC practices and that expenses are monitored within budgetary limitations.
  • Prepares monthly reports to track expenditures forassigned programs and submits for the Director's review.
  • Attends meetings, educational workshops and training sessions as well as assists with other departmental functions, as required.


8. Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director or Director.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics :
  • Knowledge of the culture, customs traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and SRPMIC laws, codes and regulations and procedures pertaining to recreation programs and administration.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
  • Knowledge of budgeting procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of best practice classroom management principles & methods and ability to implement.
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreational, social and cultural programs for youths and adults.
  • Knowledge of recreation facility maintenance and operations.


  • Skill developing and maintaining accurate, detailed records, highly organized and stop communication skills.
  • Skill developing effective public relations materials.
  • Skill organizing, promoting and operating public events, sporting events and all recreational programs.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with public and Tribal officials, representatives various agencies, organizations and groups plus members of the Community.
  • Skill in work management and work leadership including scheduling of multiple projects.


  • Ability to develop, plan, organize, implement social recreation programs and activities.
  • Ability to supervise, train and evaluate staff.
  • Ability to develop and implement a variety of inclusive recreational youth programs and related activities and programs
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with staff, members of public and other individuals with whom the incumbent regularly comes in contact.
  • Ability to use personal computer and related software including MS Office.
  • Ability to make sound decision in fast paced environment
  • Ability to resolve customer conflict and utilize negotiation skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and establish goals.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Education, Behavioral Sciences, Administration, Leisure Services or a closely related field required, AND1 year experience above the clerical level in programming and coordinating structured and specialized recreational activities, OR
  • An Associate's Degree in Recreation Administration, Leisure Services, or a closely related field, AND three years' experience in programming and coordinating structured and specialized recreational activities, OR
  • A high school diploma or GED and work experience equivalent to 6 years full-time recreation work, AND 2 years' experience programming and coordinating structured and specialized recreational activities.


  • Equivalency:Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.


  • Underfill Eligibility:An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.


Special Requirements

  • This position is subject to non-standard work hours and may be required to work outside normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive background check including fingerprinting and have no prior convictions of offenses tochildren or elders.
