  • Position Function Summary:

  • This position, in the absence of the classroom teacher, is responsible for providing instruction and managing the learning environment of children from birth to 5-years of age. Must supervise children at all times. The position reports to the Center Manager or Lead Teacher at the location to which they are assigned.

  • Assist classroom staff in carrying out daily center activities, outings, field trips, and special events.
  • Assist classroom staff with any clean-up and sanitation.
  • Prepares and supervises various activities with center teaching staff.
  • Interacts with children and encourages appropriate behaviors through Problem Solving Approach to guidance.
  • Directs activities with children, under the guidance of the classroom teacher or Lead Teacher.
  • Conduct self in professional manner upholding the values and philosophies of the agency and division.
  • Participate as a team member in the obtainment of program and division objectives.
  • Must provide accurate and timely documentation, as needed.
  • Will abide by the Confidentiality Statement.

  • Fair Labor Standards Act Provisions:

    This position is non-exempt under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to the Agency's policies and procedures pertaining to overtime hours and premium pay.

    Independence of Action: Supervision Received:

    The Substitute works under general supervision of the Center Manager or Lead Teacher.

    Supervision Exercised:

    The Substitute is responsible for their own work and has no supervisory authority or responsibility.

    Coordination and Cooperation with Internal and External Parties:


    Responds to requests for information from all levels of management and works with other department staff on issues and special projects that may have a high level of impact on HELPNM administrative division standard operating procedures and/or processes.


    Incumbent has a high level of contact with external parties, inclusive of Board members, vendors and government agencies.

    Education and Experience:
    • High School Diploma or GED

    • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as Microsoft Office Suite, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology;
    • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar;
    • Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented and self-directed, ability to multi-task;
    • Excellent human relations skills;
    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to convey information effectively;
    • Ability to work on several requests simultaneously without losing focus;
    • Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information without disclosing information to unauthorized individuals;

    Certification, Licenses and Registrations:
    • Some staff members may be required to maintain a current New Mexico driver's license, an insurable driving record, and provide proof of current liability insurance meeting or exceeding State-required minimum coverages.

    Training Requirements:
    • Participate in workshops/seminars/conferences to keep informed of administrative changes.

    Tools and Equipment Used:
    • Standard office equipment, including desktop computer and standard MS-Office applications;
    • Must be able to operate a company vehicle.

    • In accordance with the conditional offer of employment, individual must pass all HELPNM, Federal and State Department of Health background investigations, if applicable;
    • Additional drug screening and background investigations may be required depending on the job assignment, or job transfer.
