Job Description

ASU Kerr is seeking an experienced event professional to direct and coordinator the technical elements of event staging and stage production, which includes lighting, sound, video and other equipment requires. This position supervises full and part-time staff that assist with the technical and operational aspects of events and coordinates maintenance projects. The ideal candidate will model a backstage and in-office culture characterized by safety, proficiency, excellence, and creative problem-solving. This position reports to the General Manager of ASU Kerr, is full-time salaried, and requires a flexible work schedule to accommodate night, weekend and/or holiday events. 

 

Salary Range

$40,000 - $47,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

·       Supervise full time Assistant Technical Director, Event Coordinator and part time technical staff, includes hiring, training, and coaching. Assumes the duties of the ATD when needed. 

·       Maintain training protocols for all technical staff. 

·       Coordinate the execution of all technical elements including lighting, rigging, video, sound systems and equipment set-up.

·       Coordinate the design and/or designs lighting, audio, video as well as other elements of events. 

·       Coordinate with clients well in advance and read contracts and riders to ascertain needs for the production and complete estimates for equipment rental needs in a timely fashion and follow up with clients. 

·       Document meetings with clients to create maps/diagrams and event set-up specifications. 

·       Determine feasibility and arrange for special staging, rental equipment, special effects, certifications, approvals and security if needed.

·       Research, analyze and purchase all high dollar purchases of technical equipment and specific project purchases. Prepare proposals for needed equipment and safety policies. 

·       Finalize and approve technical aspects of all public media content and provide to the Marketing & Publicity Manager for final looks, approval and use. 

·       Prepare technical/equipment budget/estimate for each event, monitor budget and inform appropriate party if approaching budgetary limit, and obtain permission before exceeding budget.

·       Communicate clients’ needs to other staff members and keep physical and electronic files up to date for others to reference. 

·       Prepare reports such as event reports, event evaluations, industrial injury summaries and expenditure summaries.

·       Work events to ensure a smooth performance. 

·       Determine staffing needs with ATD and oversee crew scheduling for events monthly.

·       Oversee and maintain inventory on all items and equipment. Participate in ordering. 

·       Perform safety checks on equipment and facilities ensuring safety guidelines are being met. 

·       Oversee work during event changeovers. 

·       Perform minor repairs on technical equipment as needed. 

·       Communicate needs to grounds maintenance company and help maintain property plant life.

·       Provide tours of facility as needed.

·       Teach production workshops as needed to ASU Cultural Affairs staff. 

·       Build the occasional set-piece, requiring basic woodworking and painting. 

·       Develop a personal code of conduct to help ensure our work environment is welcoming, equitable and supports our department mission and core values along with the ASU Charter. 

·       Represent department on committees as assigned by supervisor. 

·       Run errands, which may require driving a 7-passenger van and/or electric golf cart.

·       Other duties and special projects as assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with a major in Drama or related field AND two years of stage management and theater production experience; OR, six years of stage drama experience which includes three years of stage management and theater production experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

·       Demonstrated knowledge of stage management, lighting and audio principles and practices.

·       Demonstrated knowledge of technical principles and practices. 

·       Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.

·       Demonstrated knowledge of food handling and intoxication laws.

·       Demonstrated knowledge and experience of multiple performing art forms such as dance, orchestral music, theater, concerts, and multimedia presentations.

·       Experience in stage procedures and production. 

·       Experience in communications and presentations. 

·       Experience in organization and time management. 

·       Demonstrated knowledge of OHSA and other safety codes as they pertain to staging, egress and occupancy.

·       Experience in multitasking and working independently.

 

Working Environment

·       Effectively coordinate technical aspects of multiple events concurrently. 

·       Ability to clearly communicate.  

·       Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds. 

·       Climb a ladder.

·       Stand for extended periods of time.

·       Basic math skills.

·       Ability to read and understand stage plans and technical specification documents.

·       Ability to work long consecutive hours, for consecutive days.

·       Valid US Driver License.
