Job Description

Definition

Under general supervision from the Fleet Automotive Manager, performs semi-skilled mechanical repair work on tires and wheels and light mechanical repair work on cars, trucks and heavy equipment. Inspects, repairs, replaces, and tests tires to determine and prevent excessive tire wear. Checks and performs preventative maintenance on tires and provides tire changing road assistance as needed. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.

Examples of Tasks

Tasks:

1. Inspects, diagnosis, and repairs tires on automotive and heavy equipment vehicles. Inspects vehicle tires for leaks and removes and replaces vehicle wheels. Removes and mounts tube and tubeless tires and patches or plugs tires as necessary. Conducts performance tests on tires and maintains accurate documentation of results. Documents and maintains records of materials used and time spent on repairs.

2. Repairs, maintains, and replaces tires and wheels by dismounting, mounting tires and wheels, balances tires and performs front end inspections to ensure even tire wear. Operates hydraulic jacks, buffers, drills, and common hand tools to repair and service tires. Operates and utilizes forklift and other equipment, as needed, for use in lifting and changing tires weighing 150 pounds or more.

3. Selects and matches replacement tires ensuring proper size, tread design, etc, and determines if replacement and/or repair is necessary. Inspects and performs recapping and retreading of tires as necessary. Cleans equipment and work area using cleaning fluids and agents and works with various chemicals, paints, and tire lubrication grease.

4. Orders and maintains adequate and proper inventory of tires, wheels and operating supplies to ensure tires are properly maintained at all times. Conducts regular inventory of all tires and ensures adequate supply of tires are on hand to maintain all department vehicles. Tracks and maintains basic computerized service and tire stock records.

5. Assists skilled mechanics in completing various automotive or heavy equipment repair services to include but not limited to fluid checks and changes of oil, transmission fluid, power steering, etc. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance services, including lubrication and minor repairs and adjustments, as needed.

6. Performs other job related duties, as assigned, that enhance and facilitates departmental operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of methods used in testing tire wear and corrective methods, or eliminating excessive wear.
  • Knowledge of recommended air pressures for various sizes of tires.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with tire servicing and repair.
  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices involved in tire servicing and repair.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in commercial tire maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of requirements for recapping of commercial automotive and heavy equipment tires.
  • Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations related to tire requirements for commercial vehicles.

  • Skill with the operation and care of tire service and repair equipment, including pneumatic tire changer, heavy-duty air and hydraulic jacks, tire spreader, dismount/mounting equipment, computer spin balancers, and air guns.
  • Ability to correctly diagnosis tire and front end problems on gas and diesel equipment/machinery.
  • Ability to follow and safely and successfully perform tire repair and maintenance on gas and diesel equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to repair and service a variety of tires and tubes.
  • Ability to determine when worn tires should be repaired or replaced.
  • Ability to maintain computerized records using RTA software for all tire service activities, supplies and inventory.
  • Ability to operate computerized tire balancer and related equipment safely.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment vehicles to assist in tire maintenance.
  • Ability to drive forklift and use various other equipment to lift tires weighing 150 pounds or more.
  • Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in the field to perform service calls or work on call.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, management, vendors and the general public.
  • Ability to lift, stand, bend, stoop and carry objects and perform repeated heavy lifting of objects weighing 50 to 100 pounds and prolonged physical labor.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work in dirt and dusty conditions.
  • Ability to work in weather exposed situation.
  • Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to work safely with chemicals and various lubricants.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with 1 to 2 years full-time experience in the servicing and repair of light and heavy-duty tires with at least 6 months of which is working on heavy-duty tires in a Fleet environment.
  • Completion of a certified Commercial Fleet Tire Worker program or closely related certification is preferred.
  • For enrolled Community members without a GED, must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.

Special Requirements

  • Must Possess and Maintain a Valid Arizona Driver's license
