Job Description

Facilities Management, Residential Facilities Services, seeks a Trades Helper to assist trades employees with daily activities on assigned jobs.


Salary Range

$20.05 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona

Essential Duties

Assist trades technicians working in the Residential Facilities Services unit that provide facilities support to the campus residence halls. Work activities include assisting personnel on repairs, collecting and delivering materials and equipment needed on the job site. Clean and/or perform minor repairs on equipment. Perform clean-up activities as jobs are completed. Communicate frequently with occupants and team members regarding work activities and timelines and provide customer service. 

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.


Minimum Qualifications

Completion of one year vocational training; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

Experience in:

  • Installing fixtures (e.g. faucets, toilets, urinals, thermostats, etc.).

Knowledge of:

  • General maintenance residential maintenance.
  • Facilities trades including plumbing and HVAC.
  • Basic computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Outlook Email).

Skill in:

  • The use of piping materials (e.g. copper, cast iron, steel, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, valves, etc.).
  • The use of equipment (e.g. pipe cutters, hand auger, power auger, pipe extractors, tubing benders, plumbing wrenches, torches, meters, gauges, etc.).
  • Customer Service

Evidence of effective communication skills.


Working Environment

  • Work in and out of residence halls on campus maintaining communication with occupants.
  • Communicate effectively and through electronic devices to perform the essential functions.
  • Drive University vehicles.
  • Utilize specific hand tools and equipment related to essential duties.
  • Lift, bend, and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Work off ladders, scaffolding, single man lifts up to 40 feet.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves).
  • Work with team members, prioritize assignments, work within guidelines.

Facilities Development and Management at ASU employment requires current eligibility to legally work in the United States. Facilities Development and Management will not be a sponsor for this position.

This position is located at the Central Plant South Facility, 1601 S McAllister Ave, Tempe, AZ. 

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment. 

This position may require working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than state appropriations. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
