Summary
Under general supervision, incumbent will operate up to a 15 passenger transit vehicle to pick up and transport Community Members on a timely fixed route within the Community and surrounding areas on a daily basis. This is accomplished by safely and efficiently operating transit vehicles. Incumbent is responsible for providing safe and efficient vehicle operations for the purpose of transporting passengers, excellent customer service and good communication, complete daily pre and post trip vehicle inspections, interior cleaning, vehicle refueling, collects and records transit fares, adhere to traffic laws (tribal, state and federal) and safety requirements involved in the operations of public transportation, and logs all stops on daily route manifest including reporting incidents. Driver work shifts may vary depending on transportation needs and may include some evenings, early mornings and weekend shifts.
Minimum QualificationsHigh School diploma or GED equivalent and experience equivalent to one-year of non-emergency driving or closely related work. Must have the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Subject to alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance to US DOT regulations (49 CFR Part 40). Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within ninety (90) days of hire. Ideal candidate will be able to speak the O'odham language fluently. Must have a current and valid Arizona Class A, B or C Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement or ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements. Must successfully complete a background check.
Examples of Duties- Drives transit vehicles on assigned routes to specific destinations in accordance to time schedules in order to transport passengers safely.
- Performs daily transit vehicle inspections prior to departure and upon return.
- Cleans interior and fuels transit vehicles on a daily basis.
- Schedules and performs routine vehicle maintenance and cleans exterior of transit vehicle.
- Assists elderly, infirmed, and special needs passengers into and out of vehicle with wheel chair lift if needed; ensuring proper safety methods and restraints are used throughout transportation.
- Collects and records pre-established transit fares.
- Logs and turns in all stops on daily route manifest, complete incidents and accident report, daily vehicle inspection reports and reports vehicle malfunctions.
- Observes all tribal, state and federal laws and safety requirements involved in the operations of public transportation.
- Notifies supervisor of unusual or problem situations.
- Provides basic emergency medical care as needed.
- Schedules and performs routine vehicle maintenance and cleans interior and exterior of transit vehicle.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of State and tribal traffic laws.
- Knowledge of State driving rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the geographical area around the Ak-Chin Indian Community and local area.
- Knowledge of basic emergency medical care practices and techniques.
- Skill in operating assigned vehicles safely.
- Must have strong customer service skills.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Community members, other staff, and the public.
- Ability to drive in heavy traffic when necessary.
- Ability to use computer and related software applications and radio equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively and clearly verbally and in writing.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull special needs or elderly passengers that are wheelchair bound.
- Ability to speak in the O'odham language is preferred.
