Job Description
The Veterinarian is responsible for performing all surgical procedures, including spaying/neutering of dogs and
cats (pre-pubescent); monitors the administration of anesthesia to animals; monitors recovery of animals and
performs post-surgical evaluation and repair; conducts pre-examination of dogs and cats scheduled for
sterilization; conducts examination of owned dogs and cats, for the purpose of evaluating general health and
possible injuries; provides emergency and non-emergency care of sheltered animals; evaluates health and vital
statistics of impounded animals and authorizes release of animals from rabies quarantine; acts as veterinarian on
record to purchase items from pharmaceutical companies; signs various documents including rabies certificates.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supervise Veterinary Technicians and the Veterinary Assistant. Responsible for all care and supervision to
ensure safe and ethical veterinary practices and standards are being adhered to.
Provide medical evaluation and care for animals impounded and sheltered within the Animal Control shelter.
Monitors animals impounded for rabies quarantine and evaluates them at end of quarantine period as to
whether they are symptomatic or asymptomatic.
Organize and participate in all scheduled annual Rabies Clinics conducted in each district of the Community.
Conduct pre-examination of dogs and cats scheduled for sterilization to determine their ability to withstand
surgery.
Supervise post-operation checks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical
recovery.
Perform surgical procedures to animals when required.
Conduct health evaluations of dogs and cats owned by Community members for diagnosis and treatment or
referral as needed and for rabies and health vaccinations through scheduled appointments.
Conduct training of shelter staff in euthanasia, disease control and prevention in shelter and clinic
environment.
Continue research and maintenance of safe and efficacious medical protocol regarding anesthesia and
surgery.
Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by veterinary staff and animal control staff.
