Job Description
SUMMARY
This person will be in charge of supervising the Public Works department under the direction of the Public Works Director. This person will be responsible for the operation of the public water, wastewater facilities, and solid waste collection. The Water Treatment/ Waste Water III must have extensive knowledge in operating and managing public utility facilities and supervising personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises the operation and maintenance of public water treatment systems and their components, i.e., water treatment and storage facilities, and water service and distribution mains.
- Maintenance of public wastewater treatment systems and their components, i.e., wastewater treatment facilities, sewer collection systems, lift stations, and stabilization ponds.
- The operation and maintenance of a solid waste collection and public works motorized vehicle and equipment, i.e., Sanitation truck, water truck, dump truck, and backhoe.
- Provides a safe working condition and environment for the public works staff and community.
- Responsible for the training of public works staff, as needed.
- Responsible for providing safe drinking water and proper disposal of solid waste and treatment of public wastewater systems in the most economical form possible, and to safeguard the health of the general public.
- Manages the public works operator’s daily routine, assigns tasks, and monitors the treatment facilities, to ensure all tests are completed and logged, schedules water testing to ensure the public water and wastewater facilities comply with E.P.A. standards.
- Responsible for filling in during the absence of the department director.
- Will be in charge of on-call
- Other duties may be assigned as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES
- Must have the ability to maintain material inventory and equipment fleet.
- Have extensive knowledge in the operation and maintenance of an iron and manganese removal filtration system and its components, wastewater treatment system, and its components.
- Must know how to supervise the installation of water and/or sewer mains and valves, electrical system, and their relations to power, electrical instruments, and controls.
- Have good mechanical and communication skills and the ability to train personnel.
- Must know how to operate heavy motorized equipment.
- Must have the ability to follow all safety rules and procedures, including guidelines for the protection of one’s health and those of the general public.
- Attend workshop and training about the duties and responsibilities of this position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a grade II water and/or wastewater certification with ITCA/ADEQ
- Must have managerial and office skills.
- Have a valid Arizona driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Be in good physical health.
- Must be able to pass DPS/FBI fingerprint background check.
- Drug testing may be required.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Associate's degree in a related field or trade school, professional or technical certification, specialized training.
- 5 years of related field experience and 5 years of supervisory work experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
· Exposed to outside weather conditions.
· Exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat.
· Exposed to high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and risk of electric shock.
· The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
· Must be available to work after hours, nights, weekends, or holidays as needed.
