Department Information
Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems, treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater for irrigation, billing and collection, public outreach and water conservation, acquisition and development of future water rights, major capital projects programs, and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health.

The Water Utility Technician - Crew Leader performs skilled work in the maintenance, repair, security, and operation of facilities, structures, and equipment relating to Aurora's raw water system.


The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on facilities, equipment, machinery, and systems
  • Performs water quality samples and testing, troubleshoots, and makes repairs
  • Participates in the installation of material, equipment, and systems
  • Performs field inspections
  • Coordinates contractor service work
  • Records information related to reservoir operation
  • Operates related computerized controls and monitoring equipment
  • Maintains records of operation on the computerized maintenance management system, writes standard operating procedures
  • Monitors security within raw water supply system
  • Performs equipment operations in maintenance of raw water supply system infrastructure
  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies
  • Ability to read and understand blue prints
  • Updates and maintains information in the maintenance management program
  • Assists in training other employees
  • Performs stand-by, call back and snow removal duties
  • Handling of chemicals
  • Perform other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
  • At least five (5) years experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of facilities, equipment, and systems in assigned maintenance function.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, equipment, and systems related to assigned maintenance function and applicable safety practices and procedures.

Abilities:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Read detailed instructions, diagrams, and schematics; maintain records and logs
  • Perform activities common to the assigned maintenance function
  • May require the ability to lift 50 pounds repetitively, with or without assistance

Skills:
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment related to maintenance function.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Colorado Commercial Class A or B Driver's License
  • A Colorado Distribution 1 license is required
  • The ability to obtain a Colorado Distribution 2 and Treatment Operator Class D within Aurora Water Department Guidelines
WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate to heavy physical work depending upon the assigned function
  • May require the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds, with or without assistance
  • Considerable walking and standing
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing; hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Vision to read manuals, record data, and monitor/observe instruments and gauges
  • Hearing/listening for troubleshooting and warning signals
  • Speech communication to provide technical information and communicate with employees and citizens

Work Environment:
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals
  • Some work may be performed in confined spaces

Equipment Used:
  • Operates tools and technological and mechanical equipment and vehicles common to utility maintenance and construction
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment

Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel
